Shining your light – sacrifice

bhouse0

We have been self-isolated for about a month now, only going into town for essential items and we’ve been on 2 walks in town. Although missing family and social interactions, we have enjoyed over the holidays being in the ‘slow lane’ as we’ve never experienced that lane before, however that is definitely not the case now being Term 2 has begun with online teaching and learning

I’ve been thinking about the word ‘sacrifice’ lately. Facing what we are at the moment with COVID-19, Easter, ANZAC Day and the tragic deaths of 4 police officers in Melbourne, had me thinking about this word and it’s true meaning quite a bit.

Sacrifice -to give up (something valued) for the sake of other considerations.

During COVID-19 we all have had to give up things for the sake of keeping everyone safe, but it really is nothing compared to many other examples of sacrifices.

My heart ached to hear about the 4 police officers in Melbourne who were tragically killed and it reminded me that so many people on the frontline sacrifice their lives daily to keep us safe. 3 days after that tragedy we remembered the ANZACS who sacrificed their lives for us. A few weeks earlier, was Easter and this is a remembrance of the greatest sacrifice of all time.

What is our response to that sacrifice? Well to me it’s summed up in 1 John 3:16.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”

Real love is an action, not a feeling. It produces selfless, sacrificial giving. The greatest act of love is giving to someone with no thought of receiving anything in return. This is what God demonstrated to us by sending His son to die on the cross. We have a prime opportunity through COVID-19 to shine brightly the love of Christ. Let’s dig deeper and make that light brighter in our community.
